A new set of Field Research tasks and rewards have been added to Pokemon Go in October 2021, and Niantic has revealed that this month’s Research Breakthrough reward is none other than Yamask!

First introduced back in 2018, Field Research gives Pokemon Go Trainers tasks to complete that culminate in a guaranteed encounter with a desirable ‘mon in the game after completing a total of seven daily Field Research tasks.

These tasks can range from everything from catching different ‘mon types to battling and even earning Candies with your Buddy.

For October 2021, Niantic’s mobile title is celebrating spooky season with Ghost-type and Dark-type tasks and rewards, as well as the Halloween-exclusive Yamask as a Research Breakthrough!

What is Field Research in Pokemon Go?

Field Research is a series of tasks that are obtained by spinning a PokeStop or Gym. Players looking to wrack up rewards will have to travel as they are only able to complete one task a day for each location.

Each task contains an objective and Trainers are given a reward for achieving them. Rewards can range from special items to encounters with specific Pokemon.

How do I unlock a Research Breakthrough?

At the start of every month, players will receive a blank map with seven spots to put stamps in. Trainers are rewarded with a stamp for the first Field Research they complete within a 24-hour period.

Players can only get one stamp per day, meaning it takes up to a week to finish the sequence. After collecting seven stamps, the Research Breakthrough is unlocked, and players will then be able to open up the package.

What is Special Research?

Special Research are tasks that are typically story-based or tied to an in-game celebration. Players who log in during events such as Go Fest or Valentine’s Day will get a set of unique tasks and objectives.

While Field Research tasks are obtained at random, these limited-time quests are the same for all players, and will often lead to encounters with Mythical Pokemon such as Mewtwo or Rayquaza. It’s a very similar concept to Field Research, except with bigger rewards.

How to get Yamask in Pokemon Go Research Breakthrough

At the start of every month, a new Research Breakthrough is introduced to the game. Players who log in will automatically be given a single Field Research task every day that rewards a stamp upon completion.

You can only collect one stamp per day, so Trainers will need to complete these quests across a total of seven days to reach the final goal which currently triggers an encounter with Yamask.

New Field Research tasks can also be received by spinning PokeStops, although the game still limits you to receiving a single stamp per day.

Is there a Shiny Yamask in Pokemon Go?

Yamask has a shiny form, and yes its available for October.

Yes, Shiny Yamask is available in Pokemon Go! The rare Shiny made its debut during the 2019 Halloween event and is still around for all Trainers to catch – if they’re lucky enough to encounter one!

Players who complete October 2021’s Research Breakthrough will have a chance at scoring the rare variant of the Unova monster.

Field Research Breakthrough Shiny rates

Just like most characters, Pokemon encounters from Field Research and Breakthrough rewards have a Shiny rate of around 1 in 450. While not the best odds, it’s still better than most of the mainline RPGs.

Those wanting to increase their chances of finding a Shiny Yamask should make sure to not miss a single day of Field Research. Trainers who complete each week will have four encounter chances total.
