Overwatch’s off-tank mech pilot hero D.Va has one of the most explosive Ultimates in the game, and as it turns out, she could be costing South Korean taxpayers billions of dollars every time she finds herself on-foot.

Anyone who has played Overwatch knows that D.Va’s mech comes equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and defensive capabilities with boosters, Micro Missiles, armor plating, the life-saving Defense Matrix, and the ability to blow itself up.

This certainly isn’t cheap either, so Redditor ‘Tog5’ decided to do some math to determine just how much a single mech costs in today’s dollars and let’s just say, taxpayer watchdog groups would be foaming at the mouth at these numbers.

Baby D.Va is already a handful without her mech.

According to Tog5, assuming each mech was made out of titanium, it would cost $1,483,796,200 in US money.

They reached this conclusion by “adding the cost of a military-grade supercomputer, 2 flight control grips, 2 Thrusters used for rockets…, 18 tomahawk missiles, 6 machine guns, 300 pounds of titanium, and 1 billion more for the tech that would be needed for the Defense Matrix,” the user explained.

The Redditor also factored in teleporting the new mechanism in and the man hours required for that before multiplying the total by eight as that’s the number of average Mech deaths per game to arrive at a whopping $11,870,369,600 per match.

I just did the math and D.Va is wasting billions of dollars in taxpayer’s money from Overwatch

In the end, those numbers are just for D.Va in one team. In a game with two, that number would be doubled.

“I have no idea how the mechs got through any layer of government let alone actually get made without people realizing how screwed the average taxpayer is with these being rolled out,” Tog5 went on to say, but did offer a suggestion to the rest of the Overwatch subreddit.

“The only solution to this is to stop letting D.Va go on Overwatch missions and focus solely on fighting that big Omnic,” they concluded.

D.va’s mechs cost a fortune.

That was a reference to a monster in Overwatch lore that attacked Asian countries, eventually resulting in the creation of MEKA.

With Overwatch 2 in development hopefully the developers at Blizzard can find a way to make D.Va’s mechs more affordable without sacrificing their capabilities.
