October 23rd, 2018 was a good day for Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag, but also one of reflection in a Players Tribune article.

100 Thieves, the esports organization that Nadeshot founded, announced that Drake and Scooter Braun had joined the organization as co-owners.

Drake needs no introduction, and neither does Braun to many, the superstar talent manager represents artists from Justin Bieber to Ariana Grande to Usher.

For Nadeshot, October 23 represented a day of reflection as he looked back on the people that inspired and led him to partner with A-listers like Drake and Braun.

First and foremost in that inspiration was his mother, who passed away in 2012, just a year after her son vaulted to the public spotlight with a win at Call of Duty XP.

After Nadeshot helped OpTic win the tournament, he called his parents.

“‘Mom! Get Dad on speaker now!,’” Nadeshot recounted in a Players’ Tribune article.

“‘What is it, Matthew? What’s going on? Why’s it so loud there?’ she said.

‘I just won a 100 grand! One! Hundred! Thousand! Dollars! Real money!’

Silence. And then, in perfect unison, my parents screamed right back at me:

About a year after that victory, Nadeshot made another call to his parents, one that would alter his life. Returning a missed call from his Dad, he learned his Mom had passed away overnight, in part because of complications from a car accident that had left her with two broken vertebrae.

In the years after her passing, Nadeshot has consistently gone above and beyond, first as a player and then as the CEO of 100 Thieves.

His most recent triumph is bringing aboard Drake and Braun, two personalities that any esports organization would love to have in their corner.

But, in celebrating, someone was missing.

“In that moment [when Drake joined 100 Thieves], I thought of my mom. I thought about how ridiculous my day had been. And all I wanted to do was to talk to her about it. I wanted her to see me now,” Nadeshot wrote in the Players Tribune article. “I want us to make something so great it would make my mom smile.”
