A FIFA player has suggested that FIFA 19’s slowest player is almost as quick as the game’s fastest player, Kylian Mbappé.

The Frenchman, who won the FIFA World Cup back in July, has a pace rating of 96, with Wolves midfielder Adama Traore the only player in the game who can match his blistering speed.

However, one FIFA fan on Twitter reckons that there may not be a massive speed difference between Mbappé and the games slowest player, Aaron Hughes, who has a pace rating of 24.

@RobTGF decided to test how big the difference in speed between the two players actually was. The test saw both players start with the ball at the edge of their penalty area, and then run up the field to the opposing team’s goal line.

The distance from the edge of the penalty area to the goal line is around 82 yards, with the Paris Saint-Germain player completing the sprint in 11.45 seconds. The Northern Irishman completed the same test in 13.1 seconds, meaning the time difference between the two was 1.25 seconds.

Using these results, we can see that Mbappé runs at a speed of 14.64 MPH, while Hughes sits at a top speed of 12.73 MPH. The discrepancy between the two is less than 2 MPH. So is pace really not such a big factor this year? Maybe we shouldn’t take Rob’s test as proof.

While that figure may not seem like a lot, 1.25 seconds over the distance of 82 metres is quite a big margin. Indeed, as Andy Castell has pointed out on Twitter, it adds up to a 12 yard difference over 80 yards.
