Team Liquid’s shock defeat to NRG Esports at the Starladder Invitational on June 2nd came as a surprise to Liquid coach, Wilton “zews” Prado.
The two North American sides will now face off again just a week later in the ECS Season 5 live finals playoffs.
The $660,000 competition hosted at the SSE Wembley Arena is the culmination of an online league that started back in March. On Sunday June 10th, a winner will be crowned.
North American squad Team Liquid will be looking to secure their first piece of silverware with Epitácio “TACO” de Melo in the squad.
They started the ECS S5 live finals strong with a win over Fnatic, but a loss to Astralis forced them into a decider match on day two, facing off against Fnatic again.
The Swedish squad was quickly dispatched 2-0, setting Liquid up with a rematch with NRG in the semi-finals.
We grabbed TL coach, Zews, to discuss the matchup following the second win over Fnatic. He explained that they had simply underestimated NRG at Starladder.
“NRG have proved in this tournament and the last one that they are a team to be reckoned with and that you shouldn’t take lightly. I think last tournament we did underestimate them. That’s not a blow to them, just as it was a domestic rivalry and they had a bit of the LAN jitters, right, it’s normal and I think they proved that they’ve evolved already to get past this.
So I think it’s going to be a really good match, it’s domestic but we don’t play that much. We played a lot online season but now it’s time to show who’s more prepared, and we will for sure come in way more prepared for this match.”
