Treyarch’s Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar has revealed that a new system for player looting is coming to Blackout.

First shown on Twitter by Vonderhaar himself, the system will allow players to choose between holding a button to loot – which is how players currently pick up items – or having the game prioritise looting over reloading, requiring players to just press the loot button.

According to Vonderhaar, the new process is currently going through “normal quality assurance and integration steps”,  but will be rolled out as quickly as possible once it is ready for players.

The changes to looting are being implemented after fans who played the Blackout beta complained about the slowness of the looting system.

Fans felt that it took too long to pick up new items, which could put them at a disadvantage if they were attempting to pick up a weapon while being chased, or trying to acquire health items when weak.

This may prove to be a disadvantage in some situations. Due to the fact that the game prioritises looting over reloading, if you attempt to reload while standing close to items, the game will pick those up first before you reload.

“Just don’t yell at me when you turn this on but can’t reload after a hot drop,” joked Vonderhaar, referencing the potential downside of the system.

Blackout releases alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on Friday, October 12. It’s currently unclear whether the new looting system will be available when the game mode officially launches.
