Treyarch announce that fixes are coming to emote peeking in Black Ops 4 Multiplayer and Blackout

In response to player feedback, Treyarch has spoken out on changes coming to emote peeking in both multiplayer and Blackout.

While the inclusion of an emote and spray system was not surprising in the least bit, fans quickly became concerned when it was discovered that the Gestures had unintended uses.

In both multiplayer and Blackout, Gestures can be used to go into third-person mode and peek around corners that otherwise would have been blocked while in first-person.

Using the Gestures in this manner creates a clear competitive advantage that could be the difference between living and dying in either mode.


As such, fans have taken to both Twitter and Reddit over the last few days to express the need for changes to the emote system.

Along with announcing details of an update for the newly-released game, Treyarch also announced that changes to the emote system will be coming in future updates.

Rather than removing Gestures altogether, the update will simply change how players can use the items.

If used in an area where competitive balance isn’t an issue, such as the staging area in Blackout, the emotes will be used as normal. In other areas, though, a “competitive version” of the emotes will be used in order to maintain proper competitive balance.

We’re aware that players have been able to use Gestures (often referred to by the community as “Emotes”) to peek around corners in modes where that can create an unfair advantage. We’re currently working on an update that creates two systems for Gestures – the default system that is in the game now, and a competitive version that disables free look and applies different camera settings to prevent using it to see around corners. The default system will be used in parts of the game where corner peeking won’t affect gameplay balance (like the staging area of Blackout), and the competitive version will be used in modes where a more restrictive camera system is needed. We want players to always have fun with Gestures as intended, but never at the expense of fair gameplay!
