Black Ops 4 game designer explains why dropshotting was nerfed

Dropshotting has been a viable tactic in Call of Duty for years, but changes to the popular trick are coming in Black Ops 4.

Having been around for quite some time, fans were no doubt surprised when dropshotting had seemingly been nerfed during the beta for Black Ops 4.

Responding to a concerned fan on Twitter, Treyarch Senior Game Designer Matt Scronce explained that the team wasn’t satisfied with the risk-free nature in which the move could be executed.

Dropshotting is a technique in which a player drops to the prone position while firing their weapon, allowing the bullets to hit the opponent’s entire body while also forcing the opponent to aim downward in order to get a shot off.


Frequently used by pro players throughout the WWII season, in particular, Scronce stated that the move “was too effective with no cost and little risk,” and added that there are “additional changes” coming.

Throughout the Black Ops 4 beta, many users on Reddit spotted the change and voiced their frustrations about it. Reddit user ‘cbntlg’ took to the Black Ops 4 subreddit, saying “you now take longer to go prone and hipfire on the way down. Your bullets spray all over the place until you ADS, which you can’t do until you’re fully prone, totally negating the reason for dropshotting.”

In light of the comments from Scronce, it seems as though this was an intended change to discourage players from using the move without worry of any drawbacks.

The extent of the “additional changes” likely won’t be known until players get their hands on the game when it releases on October 12.
